
Sheehan brings over 12 years of experience in advertising
and marketing to the advertising sequence. She held leadership
positions at agencies in Boston, Chicago and St. Louis, and has
consulted with numerous companies including People Magazine and
Laura Ashley.
Sheehan teaches the Principles of Advertising course, as well as
courses in advertising and brand planning, media, and research
methodology. She also works with Portland students in the Strategic
Communication program. Her research involves culture and new
technology, and she has published extensively about privacy and the
Internet, and about Direct-to-Consumer prescription drug
advertising. She currently serves as Associate Editor of the
Journal of Advertising, the leading advertising research
journal.
With alum Steve O'Leary, Sheehan published a trade book called
"Building Buzz to Beat the Big Boys" , which helps small businesses
learn how to harness the power of word of mouth. She is also
involved in the
Greenwashing Index, an industry/academic initiative to
draw attention to issues with environmental messages.
In 2001, Sheehan won the School of Journalism and Communication’s
Marshall Award for Innovative Teaching. She currently is an Oregon
Community Credit Union Fellow and a Page Legacy Scholar, and has
also been the Dave and Nancy Petrone Faculty Fellow.
